Aim:
The course aims at preparing the participants for line and project management positions within technology and product development. When they have passed the course, they should be able to:
  • Evaluate and discuss the usefulness of academic literature in the field of product development, and to analyse industrial product development and innovation processes on the basis of established theoretical perspectives and models.
  • understand important organizational prerequisites for a successful product development, and understand why technology based businesses are being organised as they are.
  • analyse how innovation processes in new and established technology based affect and are being affected by industrial dynamics.


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TEIO61 Industrial Management or similar

Organisation:
The teaching is to a large extent problem based, where the student is expected to take responsibility for the individual learning. The theoretical platform is presented in a series of lectures, which also include practical experiences presented by guest lecturers. This is further developed in seminars, which are devoted to discussions related to theory and practical case studies. Groups of students will be responsible for presentations of additional literature, in various sub-fields of innovation management, which is selected in consultation with the teachers. The course will also include field trips to industrial firms.

Course contents:
Technology based development is a central theme in the course. Technological development and its connection to organization and management is studied both on an industry level, in terms of how technology based industries change over time, and on a company level, i.e. how technology based businesses are organized and how technology and product development activities are managed within the firm. The curse with entail the following parts:
  • Product development processes and organizational structures for technology and product development.
  • Strategic perspectives on product develpoment; product portofolios and platforms.
  • Incremental and radical innovation; positioning the firm in relation to new technology
  • How can new technology emanate internally in the company and from the existing technology base.
  • The dependence of an appropriate context; how to create environments that support technological developments.
  • Technology and industry life cycle models.
  • Technology and knowledge development, market development, financing and institutional change in different industrial contexts.
