Aim:
The course aims to make the student become familiar with the fast developing areas of genomics and bioinformatics. The course will provide fundamental knowledge of the following technologies*: large scale genome sequencing, gene expression profiling, proteomics, metabolomics, mutant analysis as well as the basics of computer-based sequence analysis.
After the course each student should be able to:
- explain the principles of each technology* used for genome analysis
- critically discuss results obtained with various technologies* in selected research articles
- perform searches for literature and sequence-related information at NCBI, ExPASy and CBI servers and at various databases for model organisms
- interprete and discuss the outcome of the above searches
- predict localization and function for a given protein sequence using computer-based tools
- design simple experiments for experimental validation of predictive data
- communicate orally and written his/her findings

|
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Molecular Biology
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
|
|
Supplementary courses:
Master course Functional Genomics ?" applications in plants, NBID37
|
|
Organisation:
The course will consist of lectures, discussion of scientific literature, study visits, exercises in commonly used databases and servers and individual Bioinformatics projects. The results from the individual projects will be presented orally and in a short written report. Attendance to the data labs, study visits, seminars and project presentations is compulsory.
|
|
Course contents:
The course presents an overview of technologies* used for genome sequencing and functional analyses including mass spectrometry, microarrays and mutant analyses. The course will also provide basic theoretical knowledge and hands on experience in using computer-based tools (Compute pI/Mw, BLAST, ClustalW, TargetP) and databases for model organisms among animals, plants, yeast and bacteria. A study visit to mass spectrometry and microarray facilities of LiU/HU is integrated in the course.
