Valid for year : 2005

NFYA16 Mechanics I, 6 ECTS credits.
/Mekanik I/

For:   FRIST   Fys

Prel. scheduled hours: 52
Rec. self-study hours: 108

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Physics

  Advancement level (A-D): A

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give the students a basic knowledge about concepts and relations in classical mechanics, with emphasis on particle dynamics, and an ability to solve problems independently.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
NMAA13 Mathematical analysis I and parts of NMAB13 Mathematical analysis II or equivalent courses.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
NFYB17 Mechanics II.

Organisation:
The content of the course is presented in the form of lectures. Important concepts are illustrated by simple class room demonstrations. Solutions of selected problems will also be presented during lessons. A number of experimental assignments are included in the course. The experimental work is preceded by a theoretical lecture.

Course contents:
Vectors applied to forces and kinematics. Newton's laws. Relative motion. Work and energy. Linear and angular momentum. Dynamics of single particles. Reduced mass. Oscillatory motion. Fluid motion and diffusion. The theory is applied to problems in physics as well as biological physics.

Course literature:
Young & Freedman, University Physics
