For:   D   IT   SOC   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 48
Rec. self-study hours: 112

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Electrical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): C

Aim:
To give fundamental knowledge on radio frequency (RF) transceiver design, from component level to system level, and understanding in performance limitations by means of theory on matching, transmission lines, passive, and active RF components in CMOS technology.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Preferably TSEK21 Introduction to Radioelectronics, or at least TFFY34 Semiconductor technology D,Y and TSTE30 Analog circuits. To follow the course the students are required to have a good background in analog circuits and frequency analysis (Fourier).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
12 lectures, 6 tutorials and 12 h laboratory work.

Course contents:
Review of personal communication systems (PCS) and basic modeling of RF communication channel. Digital modulation, detection, and multiple access schemes. Reviev of digital baseband processors. Review of transceiver architectures and introduction to principles for RF CMOS circuit design. Circuit design of basic RF CMOS blocks: low noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, oscillator, frequency synthesizer, power amplifier. Overview of commercial personal communication systems.
