Aim:
The aim of the course is to give a foundation in chemistry and a preparation for further university studies in natural science.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and and laboratory work. The students homework, initiativ and activity is of great importance.

Course contents:
Atomic structure and the periodic table. Ionic bondning and covalent bondning. Aggregations forms and intermolecular bondnings. Reaction formulas. Chemical calculations (stoichiometry). Acid and bases. Oxidation and reduction. Properties of gases and the ideal gas law . Termochemistry. Electrochemistry: electrodes, cells, batteries, electrolysis. Air and water. Salts. Metals och nonmetals: inorganic chemistry with trends from the periodic table. Chemical equilibrium. Acid and bases: protolytic reactions, pH-bcalculations, bufferts. Volumetric analysis Foundation in organic chemistry: Hydrocarbons. Organic chemistry: structural formulas, functional groups, nomenclature, Properties of important functional groups, common reactions and some reaction mechanisms. Modern material.
