Aim:
The aim of the course is to give students an insight into product development, its organization and tools, and its connection to other activities in the company.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge in mechanical engineering
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures cover theory, tools and methods. Seminars will be used for minor group activities and tool training. A small development project will be run in groups.

Course contents:
STRATEGY: Development process and organization, classes of products.
SPECIFICATION: Customer needs and translation to product specification.
CONCEPT GENERATION AND SELECTION: Functions, organs and components, idea generation methods, evaluation techniques.
PRODUCT ARCHITECTURE: Integral and modular design, organ interfaces and grouping, product structure.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: Its role for the product and for the company.
PROTOTYPING: Various types of prototypes and their importance and use.
MANAGEMENT: Planning and economics.
