Aim:
The course will discuss users' ideas, wishes, and needs regarding newtechnology. The course also covers existing technolgy within home informatics and practical experience of methods to investigate user needs. Finally the course gives insight about the difference between the knowledge paradigms within the social sciences and technological fields and practical experience of writing requirement specifications.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge within programming, data structures and computer science. In total more than 30 points.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The lectures give the theoretical backgrund. The theory will be further discussed at seminars and labs where activ participation from the students is required. The largest part of the course is the project work which will be reported both by a written report and at a seminar.

Course contents:
The course contains the introduction to the fundamental thpught paradigmsn science and social science research, as well as other understandings of knowledge such as common sense and tacit knowledge to bridge the rift between technolgy and social science. The course gives a general view of how the users "tar teknik till sig" and why technology is used or not used, somtimes in unpredictable ways. Differencesbetween users will be discussed, for example different ages, gender, classes, etniciter, bostadsorter and handicaped people. Even the different needs in different organisations of users are illustrated. The engineer's different roles towards the users are dicusssed. The technical content of this course will consider existing technology within the project area, with a special emphasis on products and services for the mobile society. The students will study existing technology within its project area that can be used as a basis for new technology within the project. One part of this is existing and future standards for home informatics.
