Aim:
The aim of the course is to present the strategic perspective of the operations function in a manufacturing firm. Special attention is paid to the holistic view of manufacturing, the competitive priorities related to operations, and the interfaces with other business functions. After taking this course, the student should possess enhanced theoretical and practical knowledge in strategic management of manufacturing operations and should be able to analyze the role of operations in the corporate strategy and formulate a consistent operations strategy.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge in Production and Operations Management (TPMM20 or corresponding).
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures: 14 hrs; Seminars: 14 hrs; Laboratories: 8 hrs
The teaching is organized in lectures and seminars. The lectures cover theory, models and approaches. The seminars are used for case discussions. One larger case is treated in groups and a written report is handed in.

Course contents:
OPERATIONS STRATEGY: Relationship to corporate strategy and
functional strategies. Manufacturing philosophies.
OPERATIONS-BASED COMPETITIVE PRIORITIES: Quality, delivery speed and reliability, cost efficiency, flexibility. Order winners and order qualifiers. Special focus on different types of and means of providing flexibility.
OPERATIONS STRATEGY CONTENT: Strategic issues and options regarding capacity, facilities, process, vertical integration, quality, organization, and control systems, especially manufacturing planning and control systems.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT: Productivity. Different types of measures for feedback to different planning and control levels. Accounting and financial perspectives.
