Aim:
In order to design and build reliable, producible and functional electronic systems an engineer needs knowledge about the materials and material properties. The course will survey the physical, chemical and mathematical properties of engineering materials used in the technology of electronics production. It will include materials interactions and mutual compatibility, thermal issues, magnetic and optical properties and materials processes for production and failure analysis, so that we are prepared to design for reliability, reducibility and functionality.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Physical Modelling, Mathematical Statistics, Electronics Manufacturing Methods and Processes
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
Organisation:
The course will include lectures, home assignments and a written exam.
Course contents:
Atomic bonding crystalline and noncrystalline solids, physical and chemical fundamentals: kinetic theory, mathematics for diffusion, chemical reactions, oxidation and corrosion.
