Aim:
Traffic Environment and Safety is presently a growing problem in most countries. This is the introduction to the course and the objective is to give the students an understanding of the size, the quality and the trends of the problem in different societies. This is presented in a historic perspective where the measurement of, the weights of and the conflicts between the various transport goals are changing. The advantages and disadvantages of various principal countermeasures are analysed.

Course contents:
1. Transport development: A historic review, an account of the present situation and a view into the future of the development of transport in general and road transport in particular. The changing goals, and problems for society.
2. Traffic environment: The changing definitions, the various ways to measure the environment and its impact on man and nature, the historic development, the principal countermeasures.
3. Traffic safety: The various definitions used, their advantages and disadvantages, exposure and risk, accident prevention and injury consequence, the historic development, the principal countermeasures.
4. The system: Traffic is a system with a number of interacting components. The road user, the vehicle, the road and the legislative system are the most obvious components. But the whole traffic process takes place in a social and political system, which must not be forgotten.
