Aim:
To reflect upon and understand the engineer?s profession and the role of the engineer in a social and historical context. The main emphasis of the course is on some of the problems and fields of learning which are investigated in research on the relation between man, technology and society (MTS).

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
General university admission requirements.

Organisation:
The course is based upon a series of lectures and ca 4 seminars, a literature assignment and a take-home examination.
|

Course contents:
The course focuses on a perspective in which the work of the engineer is seen as a cultural activity, and which locates and studies the engineer and the engineer?s work in different fields of learning. In the course various questions are discussed, such as the role of the engineer in an organisational and social context; what significance does the engineer have for the culture; how can the engineer?s expertise be expressed and conveyed; has the role of the engineer changed over time; can we speak in terms of an engineer culture; for whom does the engineer design technology, and how do the users utilise and perceive what the engineer creates?
