| Aim: The course is intended to give a basic orientation in and an understanding of the long and complex historical process that has led to the high-technological society of the present day. Another important goal of studies in technology history is that they can contribute to the creation of a bridge between the two traditional disciplines ? technology/science and humanities/social science. |

| Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered) Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding. |

| Organisation: Lectures are alternated with seminars on problem-based texts. The course includes a one-day excursion. |

| Course contents: The introduction is followed by a chronologically ordered exposé from antiquity to the industrial revolution. The last two centuries are mainly treated in a thematic way. Examples of subjects to be taken up in lectures and seminars: Technological advances in antiquity; antiquity - stagnation or progress; the dark or dynamic middle ages; early forms of technology transmission; technology and science in the new era; new sources of power are mobilised; development of the infrastructure; the Swedish industrial community and the debate on modern technology The point of departure is the development in Europe and the interplay with other cultures. |

| One of two marks is awarded for the course: Pass or Fail. For a Pass, attendance and active participation at all the seminars is mandatory. Absence is compensated for by writing an analysis of the text taken up. The course ends with a written examination. | |||
