Aim:
The course will study the molecular processes (molecules and their interactions) underlying the basic function of the organism, with particular emphasis on mammalian species. Students will learn about the different classes of molecular machines that mediate membrane transport, generate electrical currents or perform mechanical displacement. Emphasis will be placed on the functional relevance of the molecules for the organism and the consequences of their malfunction.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
Organisation:
The course consists of a set of lectures complemented with lectures given by the students on specific topics. Students are also expected to write a literature report based on primary scientific literature that will be discussed in small group seminars.
Course contents:
The course will deal with the molecular basis of circulatory and respiratory physiology, nerve and muscle function and kidney physiology. Some of the topics covered will include: oscillatory gene expression and circadian rhythms, epithelial sodium channels and hypertension, aquaporins and water fluxes, potassium channels and pacemaker activity, calcium sparks and ryanodine channels.
