Aim:
The aim is to give an introduction to geographic information technology as well as deeper knowledge about the GIS as a tool for engineers. After the course the students should
  • be familiar with basic geographic information technology and understand the difference between ordinary and geographic information systems
  • be familiar with the most important application areas for GIS within planning for traffic and transportation
  • understand how GIS-applications are designed and be able to create an application using a GIS-program
  • be able to work independently with computers from written laboratory instructions and developed their skills to present the result in clear and well structured reports


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Positioning and GIS

Organisation:
The course contains lectures, projects and laboratory work. The two latter are obligatory.
The course is offered twice during 20101; Vt1 and H1+Ht2.


Course contents:
Basic concepts. Applications for GIS. Geographic databases. Hardware and software. Data capture, storing, processing and presentation. Cartography. GIS analysis. Practical excercises with GIS-softwares. Simple system specification and development. Applications for transportation
