Aim:
The course is intended to give knowledge about principles and methods for analysis and design of asynchronous systems and their implementation in VLSI.
  • Graphic description of asynchronous handshake protocols and behavour
  • model asynchronous systems
  • describe and solve optimisation problems for synthesis of asynchronous circuits
  • understand limits and assumptions in asynchronous circuits
  • implement asynchronous circuits


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic courses in switching theory and digital circuits.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, exercises, and laboratory exercises.

Course contents:
Asynchronous VLSI techniques, Design methodology, sensitivity to element and wire delays, Modelling and simulation of asynchronous systems and circuits, handshaking protocols, logic-level implementation, data transmission, coding schemes, data-bundling, realization of basic cells in VLSI, Implementation of state-machines. Pipelining, protocol conversion for interfaces, arbitration, metastability, verification and synthesis.
