Aim:
The aim of the course is to give general theoretical aspects in the field of Medicinal Chemistry. This include knowledge of the interactions between low molecular compounds and enzymes, receptors, DNA and RNA, and methods for identification, design, synthesis and evaluation of drug candidates.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Approved Organic chemistry 2 (NKEB22) and attended Preparative organic chemistry (NKEC44), Biochemistry 2 (NKEC53) and Pharmacology for Chemists, respectively

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The education includes lectures, seminars and laboratory work

Course contents:
The course will give knowledge of the fundmental steps included in the development of a drug, concepts in the interaction between ligands and receptors (SAR relationships), methods for combinatorical chemistry, practical skills in design and development of biological active substances. Futher to give a broad view of drug administration, metbolism and excreation and the use of computers in medicinal chemistry. Laboratory course include design, syntheis and evaluation of biological active substances in combination with orally presented literature projects.
