Valid for year : 2007

NFYB01 Wave Motion, 6 ECTS credits.
/Vågfysik/

For:   Fys

Prel. scheduled hours: 64
Rec. self-study hours: 96

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Physics

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): G1

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in wave motion with applications within optics and acoustics. After having finished the course the student knows:
  • how to solve problems within the geometrical optics, especially using ray-diagrams for mirrors, lenses, and arrays of lenses (including use and limitations of the method of solution)
  • how to solve problems within basic physical optics, especially diffraction and polarization
  • how to measure basic acoustic and optical quantities and describe the result and the used method

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Analysis in one variable, analysis in several variable is studied simultaneously, complex numbers, matrix algebra

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Electromagnetic Field Theory, Applied optics, Optics of materials, Optoelectronics

Organisation:
The lectures in Wave Motion are meant to give a basic understanding of the subject. Here the most important theory sections are presented together with some applied exercises. The knowledge is deepened and applied through special problem solving sessions. The course also contains two laborations within wave motion, concerning light and sound.

Course contents:
General wave motion, the wave equation and some of its solutions. Mechanical and electromagnetic waves. Superposition of waves. Phase and group velocity. Spreading of electromagnetic waves, reflection and refraction. Geometrical optics. Polarization, double refraction and optical activity. Interference and diffraction. Basic acoustics.
