Valid for year : 2005

TMKT32 Design optimisation, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Konstruktionsoptimering/

For:   M

Prel. scheduled hours: 66
Rec. self-study hours: 134

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Mechanical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
The course aims at integrating traditional design methodologies with concepts and techniques of modern optimisation theory and practice. In the course the student will learn to create an appropriate mathematical description (a simulation model) of the design problem, to formulate the optimisation problem and finally to use numerical optimisation techniques and computer support tools in order to solve the problem. The course has an emphasis on system design where ?odesign" is defined in a broad context, and therefore students from diverse disciplines are welcome to attend the course.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Introductory courses in mathematics, mechanics, solid mechanics and mechanical engineering design.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures, seminars, computer exercises and project work where the methods and techniques thought in the course are applied to a real design task.

Course contents:
Introduction Optimisation and evolutionary design. How can optimisation support the design process? Optimisation methods Genetic algorithms, the Complex method, response surfaces methods. Formulation of the objective function What is optimal? Aggregating multiple objectives and multi-objective optimisation. Constraint handling Constraints versus objectives and different penalty methods. Post optimal analysis Assessing the final solution ?" have we really found the optima? Sensitivity analysis in order to asses the system robustness

Course literature:
Scientific articles, compendium.
