Aim:
The aim of the course is to provide a background of some common experimental techniques and instrumentation, which are widely used for material characterisation in university research and industries.
|
|
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basics in condensed matter physics.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Course contents:
The lectures (2 hours for each techniques) to provide the theoretical background and the principle of the technique. A brief introduction to the physical mechanisms of the effects being measured in the methods covers the transport properties of electrons, the interaction between condensed matter and electromagnetic radiation (audio- and microwave-frequency radiation and light ranging from near-infrared to ultra-violet region), electrons and ions. The course consists of 10 laborations covering the following techniques: Electrical characterisation [Resistivity, Current versus Voltage (I-V), and Capacitance versus Voltage (C-V) measurements], Photoluminescence (PL), Cathodoluminescence, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRAS), Laue camera, Nano-indentation, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS).
