Aim:
The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge about light and its interaction with biological tissue. After passing the course the student should be able to model and simulate light-tissue interaction with respect to different parameter settings and usefulness. Be acquainted with different optical measurements related to physiology.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TBME01 Biomedical Engineering or TBME02 Anatomy and physiology, TBMT01 Biomedical Signal Processing or TBMT02 Medical images and basic optics.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course is based on problem based learning. This includes tutorial sessions, seminars, lectures, workshops and laboratory work (16 h).

Course contents:
Optical properties of biological tissue. Light transport in tissue. Therapuetic window. Light transport models. Measurement of tissue optical properties. Optical coherence tomography, multi-photon excitation, flourescens, etc.
