Aim:
The aim of the course is to give a physical understanding of phase transformations based on a thermodynamical description that can be applied in materials science metallurgy, electronic device development design or construction materials engineering.

Course contents:
This is a necessary and fundamental course in materials science folowing an international tradition. Crystal phases, defects in crystals incl. vacancies, interstitials and dislocations. Solutions and alloys. Atomic processes: diffusion and creep. Multiphase materials: thermodynamics, phase equilibrium, metastability, phase transformations, and precipitation. Mechanical properties of metals: elasticity, plasticity and fracture. Steel. Structure - property - synthesis relationships.
