Aim:
The overall purpose of the course is for students to acquire knowledge and critical thinking about corporate social responsibilities.
Upon successfully finishing this course, students should be able to
  • Describe and discuss corporate social responsibility (CSR) theories and concepts, and relate them to general organization theories.
  • Explain the rationale, internal as well as external, for developing CSR programs
  • Analyze CSR issues from different and or multi-stakeholder perspectives
  • Critically evaluate CSR programs of selected firms, relate them to current challenges and suggest improvements.


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Courses passed in organization theory, industrial management or similar courses

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Leadership and Organizational Change

Organisation:
The teaching activities are organized in lectures, seminars and case discussions. The seminars and cases are based on the students own active preparations, presentations and discussions. Individual and group assignments, in addition to teaching activities, support learning outcomes.

Course contents:
  • What is CSR? The major concepts and theories of corporate social responsibility: The interrelation between firms and stakeholders
  • Firm practices such as human resource management and supply chain management as drivers and challengers of corporate social responsibility
  • External forces as drivers of corporate social responsibility
  • CSR programs and practices at leading corporations, and criticize and analyze them

Scientific articles and supporting material which will be announced on the course web.

In determining each grade and the total grade on the course, the results of all assignments and seminar participation will be weighed together. To pass the course, students are required to get a Pass grade on all assignments and to attend compulsory lectures and seminars.
Students who get a fail grade on any assignment will get one opportunity during the course to revise that assignment to try to get a pass grade (no higher grade than 3). However, it is not allowed to revise assignments with pass grades in order to receive a higher grade.
