Aim:
The course aims to give basic knowledge about micro organisms morphology, physiology and metabolism as well as ecology and evolution, including understanding for micro-organisms importance, both in nature as in medicine. The course should, furthermore, give the student practice in microbiological laboratory work.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
General Chemistry 1, 2 and 3 (NKEA 11, 12 and 13 or NKEA 14, 15, 16 and 17) and Cell biology (NBIA01).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course includes lectures which give a theoretical summary of the subject and in certain degrees completes and/or explains the course literature. Laborations make up a great part of the course. They exemplify the theory and the results are presented and discussed at seminars. The course includes, furthermore, group work of practical and/or theoretical character, which is to be presented both in writing and orally.

Course contents:
Sterile techniques and sterilization. Microorganisms basic structure and function and thier rolls in nature, amongst others taxonomy and classification of prokaryotes, microbe morphology, bacterial physiology, virus, antimicrobica, medical microbiology, ecological microbiology and applied microbiology.
