Aim:
Through the course the students will learn the advantages, disadvantages and incentives for the use and production of biofuels. The course will review the production processes involved, raw materials, emissions values, application in vehicles and the issue regarding their sustainability.
Upon completing the course, students should be able to:
- Explain how biofuels are produced, i.e. their inputs, production processes and outputs.
- Be aware of applications of biofuels in current and future vehicles.
- Vehicle Technologies and Upgrades
- Biofuel Blends and Full biofuel use
- Fuel economy with biofuels
- Calculate emission values and be able to assess the environmental performance of biofuels from a life-cycle perspective.
- Analyze and deliver synergies and process symbiosis to improve the environmental performance of biofuels through the use of by-products and wastes.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Large Technical Systems and Environment, Environmental Technology or equivalent.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Industrial Ecology, Management Systems and Sustainability, Resource Efficient Products and Enviromental Systems Analysis - Project Course.
|
|
Organisation:
Students will expand upon their knowledge throughout the course with lectures given by the lecturers and industry experts. Thereafter, application of this knowledge will be put to the test in group case studies to produce environmental and feasibility studies for relevant biofuels. The group assignments will be presented in the form of a written report and oral presentation. Compulsory supervision seminars are used to support the group assignment. There will be a laboratory practice on environmental systems analysis.
