| Aim: Participants will gain a deeper understanding of modern computer network infrastructure technologies, with a focus on IP-based networks. The course complements the basic computer network courses both in depth and in breadth. |

| Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered) TDTS41 (Computer Networks), TDTS43 (Computer Networks and Distributed Systems), ETE232 (Computer Networks) or the equivalent. Interest in computer networks and familiarity with using Unix-like systems. | Course contents: History of data networks. Ethernet MAC (10Mbit-10Gbit). Ethernet VLAN. Switching and STP. Asynchronous point-to-point connections. Optial networks. The optical layer. Optical components. WDM. SONET/SDH. Architectures for optical networks. Wireless networks: the IEEE 802.11 MAC. Network design (LAN and WAN). Routing and switching (RIP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS). Network topologies. Ring networks. Tunneling and VPNs. IPv4 and IPv6. |
