Aim:
The course intends to provide a basic understanding of the use of antibodies in life science research and specific knowledge and practical skills in three different immunological techniques*; immunohistochemistry, ELISA and Western blotting. After the course each student should be able to:
  • explain the principles of each of the three different techniques*
  • choose and explain their choises of method to answer a specific question
  • run the three different methods*
  • analyze the data obtained using the different techniques*
  • use a light microscope as an analyzing tool
  • communicate the results both orally and in a written report
  • summarize and communicate scientific reports
  • critically discuss the results obtained using such techniques* in selected research articles


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
A bachelor's degree with a major in biology including advanced courses in molecular biology or related subjects, at least 24 ECTS credits.

Organisation:
The course will include lectures, seminars and laboratory exercises. The results from the practical work will be presented orally and in a written report. Attendance to the labs and seminars is compulsory.

Course contents:
The course focuses on three different immunological techniques; immunohistochemistry, ELISA and Western blotting. The students are expected to demonstrate both theoretical and practical knowledge about these three techniques. The course will provide theoretical background about histological "know how", light microscopy, protein separation and blotting and detection following polyacrylamide gel-electrophoresis. During the practical laboratory work, the students will obtain "hands on" experience with each of the three techniques*. Emphasis of the course will be to give understanding about why and when the different methods are suitable to use, and how to analyze and communicate the obtained results.
