Aim:
Fourier optics is concerned with the propagation of light. The basic mathematical tool in this field is the decomposition of the light signal into elementary functions, i.e., Fourier decomposition. The course will provide insight to 2D optical systems designed to convey information. Particular attention will be paid to the physical limitations set by light diffraction, a phenomenon that can be accounted for in a wave-optics approach but not in a geometrical-optics approach. The ability to manipulate light waves will be discussed, and optical information processing with aid of spatial light modulators plays a central role.
