Aim:
The aim of the course is to give basic insight in planning and control of a traffic system. The course gives an orientation of problems and applications in the area of traffic informatics, and gives an side look in how information technology may be utilized for a more traffic system which is more efficient, safer and more friendly to the environment. Further, the course gives insights into the theories and models which is used to describe and analyze problem in the different area of application; and give examples of some common tolls for planning and control in traffic systems.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Optimization, Optimization in networks.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures and seminars and a number of laborations and computer exercises. A number of external lecturers is given. The examination consists of exercises and laborations both individual and in smaller groups.

Course contents:
Part I: Strategic traffic planning, the 4-stage mode, trips distribution and the model of gravitation, models for traffic assignment, Logit models, combined models, estimation of traffic demand, planning of public transports.
Part II: Traffic flow modelling, Dynamic models for traffic assignment and demand estimation, Traffic control by traffic lights, traffic information and route guidance
