Aim:
To cover the following areas:
Nomenclature of organic compounds. The different functional groups in organic chemistry.
Basic reaction mechanisms.
Organic laboratory techniques.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Attended General Chemistry 1-2 (NKEA 18 and 19).
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
NKEB22 Organic chemistry 2 , NKEA17 Biochemistry 1
Organisation:
Theoretical aspects are daily presented in lectures. Problem solving is studied during lessons. In the laboratory the students are trained in elementary organic chemical laboratory techniques in relation to the theoretical part of the course.
Course contents:
Nomenclature, structure, and physical properties of the most common substances representing different functional groups. Basic reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry.
In the laboratory, basic synthetic procedures are performed, in relation to basic reactions and principles of purification (crystallisation, distillation and extraction).
