Aim:
A natural continuation of NBIC25, the course will focus on the concept of physiological adaptations and homeostasis of vertebrates species (including man) to stable and unstable environments . A special emphasis will be placed on the quantitative integration of physiological processes and the role of the nervous and endocrine systems to achieve homeostasis.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures and laboratories. The course will also include a literature study which should be presented in a written report (in English) and at seminars (oral presentation). In order of importance: literature study, problem solving sessions, laboratory exercises and lectures.

Course contents:
The problem solving sessions will deal with quantitative aspects of metabolism and scaling, oxygen transport in the blood and glomerular filtration rates. The lectures include: homeostasis, diving physiology in man and marine mammals, special metabolic states (exercise) and physiology of development.
