Aim:
The course will provide basic knowledge of energy technology, which is necessary to apply formulas and relationships about flows in technical constructions. Another objective of the course is to create understanding of heat transfer and applied thermodynamics in technical applications.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Calculus, Algebra

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
TMMI38 Hydraulics and Pneumatics, TMKI50 Chemical Engineering,

Organisation:
The course consists of lecturers, seminars and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Science of motion: Fundamental relationships for flowing fluids, the continuity equation, Bernoullis equation with applications, laminar and turbulent flow, flow in pipes and pumps. Forces caused by fluid flows and flow with friction. Applied thermodynamics: The fundamental principles of thermodynamics, ideal gases, work and heat. Properties of pure substances. The first and second principles of thermodynamics applied to technical processes such as the Carnot process, gas turbine, steam power, heat pump and refrigerating machine. Heat transfer: Basic theories for heat exchange through thermal conduction, convection and radiation. Thermal transmittance. Heat exchangers.
