Aim:
The objectives of the course are: - to present advanced information on the molecular mechanisms of the information flow between DNA, mRNA and protein expression, - to give a general knowledge about the organisation of the genetic material and about procaryotic and eucaryotic gene expression, - to teach practical methods in molecular genetics.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic program of biology (50p with a minimum of 25p theory).
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
Organisation:
The theoretical part includes lectures, seminars and discussion of recent literature.
The practical part consist of short presentation of basic genetic techniques and their application in laboratory practice. Combination of various techniques will be needed for solution of the laboratory problems.
Course contents:
Study of the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription, translation and processing of RNA. Gene regulation. Basic genetic
techniques: methods for preparation and purification of nucleic acids and electrophoresis of DNA. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with application to the identification of bacteria, RT-PCR, transformation, transduction, DNA sequencing, in vitro mutagenesis, and gene cloning. Seminars will exemplify how application of recombinant DNA techniques have led to rapid progress in our knowledge about fundamental biological processes. Discussions about the ethical problems in molecular genetics.
