Aim:
This course focuses on the size, quality and the trend of the road safety problem in different societies. It examines different theories, problems, challenges and countermeasures within traffic safety research. Emphasis will be on how to identify the main accident factors, exposure and accident risks, and which factors influence the number and severity of accidents. The student shall after the course be able to independently identify traffic safety problems, carry out investigations, set up traffic safety activity plans and evaluate their effects.

Organisation:
The course includes lectures and group works, which will be presented in writing and orally. The used learning method in the course is Problem-based learning (PBL), which leads students to work in small groups under the guidance of an instructor to organize their ideas and previous knowledge related to the chosen road safety topic.

Course contents:
The course covers a wide range of topics. The course is divided into two parts of which the firstcovers factors of importance to road safety as well as their effects on traffic safety:
  • Traffic safety and society development in a global perspective
  • Speed and Safety
  • Alcohol and driving
  • Motorcyclists safety
  • Pedestrians and cyclists safety
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Driver education and licensing
  • Traffic police management
  • Road safety campaigns
  • Traffic engineering
  • Vehicle safety
The second part will be an analysis of the traffic safety situation on a regional or national level covering:
  1. Setting up of activity plans for safety and analysis of its effects
  2. Set up of a National Safety Program

Ther will be compulsory hand-in work reports during the course. Each group of students should prepare seminar presentation by the end of each part of the course.
