Aim:
The course shall give an understanding of modern physics which started to develop 1900. After the course, the students should be able to perform simple calculations and experiments within the field, and to read about applicationen as well as further theory.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
NFYA 31 Mechanics, NFYA 32 Electromagnetic Fields and
NFYA 33 Electromagnetism and Waves or equivlent courses.

Lectures and laboratory lessons.

Course contents:
1. Quantum mechanics: the wave nature of matter; the particle nature of electromagnetic radation; the Schrödinger equation; Heisenberg's uncertainty relations; model systems such as praticle in a box and harmonic oscillator; tunneling; operators; quantization of angular momentum; spin; the Pauli principle.
2.Atomic physics; atomic spectra, the Bohr model, the hydrogen atom, spin-orbit coupling, the Zeeman effect, many-electron systems, the periodic table, Hund's rules.
3. Subatomic physics; nuclear sructure; the liquid-drop model; the shell model; alpha-, beta- and gamma decay, fission and fusion, elementary particles, fundamental interactions.
