Aim:
The aim of the course is to provide the participants with knowledge in applied optimization, that is, the process of using optimization theories and methodologies for defining, modeling, solving, and analyzing engineering problems in communication systems. The course participants will learn about
  • optimization problems frequently encountered in communication systems
  • the process of developing of optimization models and methods
  • practical skills in implementing optimization methods in computer programs.


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Programming principles, Data structures and algorithms, Optimization in networks

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, seminars, and computer labs.

Course contents:
  • Modeling of optimization problems in communication systems
  • Optimization theory with focus on combinatorial optimization Optimization methods, in particular local search methods, meta heuristics, column generation, and Lagrangean-relaxation based search
