Valid for year : 2009

ETE235 Switching Circuits and Logical Design, 3 ECTS credits.
/Digitalteknik/

For:   FRIST

Prel. scheduled hours:
Rec. self-study hours: 80

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Mechanical Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): G1

Aim:
The course gives an introduction to switching circuits and logical design and basic knowledge how switching circuits are used in control systems for different processes and machines. In the end of the course the student should know about how to:
  • Go from one number system to another.
  • Analyze basic digital networks and describe their functionality.
  • Realize basic digital networks according to a description of its functionality.
  • Realize the construction into hardware.
As sub elements the student should know how to:
  • Perform calculations using Boolean algebra.
  • Conclude if a problem description is related to a combinatorial circuit or a sequential network.
  • Realize a state graph into a sequential network with different kinds of flip-flops.
  • Use Karnaugh diagram to find minimal solutions for combinatorial sequencial networks.
  • Apply fault tracing in smaller digital networks.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Seminars where theory and practical work are mixed.

Course contents:
  • Number systems
  • Gates and combinatorial networks
  • Logical expressions and Boolean algebra
  • Karnaugh diagram
  • Flip-flops and sequential networks
  • Introduction to the microcomputer

Course literature:
A specially written compendium for the course. The compendium contains theory, exercises, laboratory instructions and a written examination from previous year.

Examination:
A written examination
3 ECTS
