Aim:
The aim of the course is to prepare students for the challenges involved in studying at masterā?Ts level in English. The purpose is to help students develop and improve their ability to communicate successfully in English with an emphasis on speaking and understanding the spoken word.. After completing the course the student should be able to:
- follow and understand a lecture given in English and be able to take notes
- participate actively in a discussion held in English and introduce new ideas and viewpoints
- extract and summarise the most important points of a discussion or lecture
- actively contribute in seminars and tutorials
- show awareness of a number of different styles and levels of spoken English
- select and use an appropriate register in professional and academic situations
- structure and present information for small groups as well as larger audiences in an appropriate manner
- give relevant feedback to other students
- critically evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses related to the English language and be aware of the methods and resources available to address language problems

Organisation:
The course will be given entirely in English. Lessons will be in seminar form and will include group discussions on a variety of topics of general current interest as well as formal presentations. Course participants are expected to contribute actively and attendance is compulsory.

Course contents:
Discussions based on a variety of topics of current and general interest. Presentation techniques and practice. Group and individual presentations. Pronunciation practice. Peer feedback. Listening comprehension based on both formal and less formal English. Listening and speaking exercises of various kinds, will be integrated into a revision of basic grammar.
