Aim:
How do diving beetles breathe underwater? Why don?Tt marine fish get dehydrated? Can reptiles breathe and walk at the same time? How can geese fly over the Himalaias? How do giraffes stand up without fainting? Could Dumbo truly fly? Why man cannot drink seawater? This and many other questions will be addressed in the course with an interactive problem-based approach.
A special emphasis will be placed on the quantitative integration of physiological processes and the role of the nervous and endocrine systems to achieve homeostasis.

Organisation:
NBIC31 is a student centered course that attempts to integrate different learning activities around specific physiological problems. Specific attention will be devoted to how to solve the problems using different learning tools: lectures, seminars, demonstrations, literature readings, lab exercises or problem sessions in which the student will always be the center figure and active participation will be expected and evaluated. The course will be structured around 2 weekly problems which the students need to discuss and solve in groups during the week. The problems will be evaluated and feedback will be provided in a recapitulation seminar held at the end of each week.

Course contents:
The course will be centered on 8 week-long topics: metabolism and energetics, digestion, nerve physiology, muscle, circulation, respiration, osmoregulation and reproduction.
