Aim:
To bring together all the various topics in computer graphics through an expose of the Special FX industry.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Organisation:
The course will be presented in a series of lectures where various films will be examined and the techniques discussed.

Course contents:
This course will examine several films in a case study fashion to discover the tricks of the trade. We will examine contemporary films, which use techniques that have been taught throughout the programme. Guest lecturers from industry will also present various tips and tricks of the trade with respect to Special and Visual Effects. Three or four different movies will be examined, each a seminal example of the application of a particular class of technique, and will be determined on a case by case basis. The learning outcomes of this course are as follows:
  • Ability to reason and criticise SFX in a Film
  • Ability to link in earlier theoretical learning to real production in Film


Course literature:
No formal textbook. However, a selection of scientific papers relating to the selected films that are chosen between students and the lecturer will be made on a case by case basis.

For a grade of 3 needs a pass in UPG1 and UPG2. Higher grades are based on the final grade of UPG2.
