The course aims at the understanding of how an information network works and of how the choice of parameters affect its performance.

Introduction: The OSI model. Error control: error correcting and error detecting codes, ARQ, protocol initialization. Queueing models: M/M/1, M/M/m, other Markov systems. Statistic multiplexing: splitting algorithms, Aloha, CSMA/CD. Routing methods. Flow control.
