Aim:
The course aims to give an introduction to the field of electromagnetics necessary for further studies in physics.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
NMBA13 Mathematical analysis II, NFYA16 Mechanics I and NFYA15 Wave motion or equivalent courses.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The content of the course is presented at lectures. Selected problems will be presented during lessons. Laborations are included in the course, these are introduced at special lectures.

Course contents:
Electrostatics: Electric Field Intensity, Coulomb's law, Potential, Gauss's law, Poisson's and Laplace's Equations, Capacitance, Dielectrics, Electrics Dipole, Polarisation. Magnetostatics: Magnetic Flux Density, Biot-Savart law, Ampere's Circuital law, Vector Magnetic Potential, Magnetic Dipole, Magnetisation, Magnetic Materials, Magnetic Circuits. Time-Varying Electromagnetic Fields: Induction, Faraday's law, Inductance. Electromagnetic waves, polarisation and refraction. The different parts of the course are presented as specific applications of Maxwell's equations.
