Aim:
The aim is that the student shall achieve a deeper theoretical and practical knowledge about the ecological structures and functions of wetlands and streams. In particular, the focus is on mechanisms and processes that are relevant for nature conservancy and environmental management activities.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Past exams in courses comparable to 50 credits (1.25 years) of basal biology at Linköping University, including courses similar to our course NBIB08 Ecology, 5 credits, and NBIB22 Fauna and Flora, 5 credits.

Organisation:
The course is given in cooperation with University of Kalmar and contains lectures, literature seminars, laborative work, excursions and computer exercises. The course has a problem oriented perspective and organization and uses computer network for communication between students and with the teachers. Participation in laborative work, excursions, exercises and seminars is part of the examination. Part of the education takes place in Kalmar.

Course contents:
The rationale behind the course is that applied biological knowledge is necessary for maintaining and create desirable ecosystem functions in the landscape, e.g. biological diversity, decreased transport of environmental pollutants or a certain water quality. Very often it is useful with a holistic perspective on the flow of water through a catchment. The course deals with wetlands, ponds, shallow lakes and streams, and the goal is to give an updated view of current research in relevant fields. The studies are subdivided into: (1) Hydrology and water quality, (2) Structure of pland and animal communities, (3) Microbial and chemical processes, (4) Managing functions for wetlands and streams, (5) Design and operation of wetlands for water treatment.
