NBIC28 Microbiological Ecology in Health and Illness, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Mikrobiell ekologi i hälsa och sjukdom/

For:   Bio   BKM   FRIST

Prel. scheduled hours: 74
Rec. self-study hours: 126

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Biology

  Advancement level (A-D): C

Aim:
The students will acquire advanced knowledge and develop skills in general microbiology. The focus is on interaction between various microorganisms and between microorganisms and their environment. The mechanisms of these interactions will be discussed in-depth.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
For the students in the biology programme: 50 credits from undergraduate classes including at least 25 credits of theory. For other students: 5 credits in cell biology, 5 credits in microbiology and 5 credits genetics, or equivalent knowledge.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures, seminars, group work and labs. The labs are to clarify theory in practice and to develop skills in microbiological techniques, both basic and molecular genetic. The project (theoretical) will be selected and done under supervision of the teacher and will aim at illustration of microbial interaction and communikation between microorganisms and the environment.

Course contents:
Interaction between microorganisms and host in beneficial and harmful ways. Normal flora - benefits and requirements for good health. Pathogenic characteristics of bacteria and viruses causing human infections. Infection process. Specific and non-specific reaction of the host under infection. Inflammation. Microbial flexibility and its genetic mechanisms. Microbial communication, quorum sensing and signal transduction.
