Valid for year : 2007

TNK082 Traffic Simulation, 6 ECTS credits.
/Trafiksimulering/

For:   ITS   KTS

Prel. scheduled hours: 38
Rec. self-study hours: 122

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Transport Engineering, Communication and Transport Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
Traffic simulation is a useful and important tool for traffic planning. A traffic simulation model makes it possible to experiment with different intersection and road designs in a simulated environment. The aim of the course is to give fundamental theoretic and practical knowledge about traffic simulation and its applications.

After completion of the course the student will be able to

  • describe the simulation methodology used in traffic simulation models.
  • describe the function of driver and vehicle models, such as models for car-following, lane-changing, speed adaptation, etc.
  • determine which problems and applications that traffic simulation is suitable for.
  • plan and carry through a traffic simulation study for a small area.
  • collect necessary input data to a traffic simulation model and be able to analyze and evaluate the uncertainty in the input data.
  • create, calibrate and validate a traffic simulation model using a traffic simulation software tool.
  • decide on which outputs that are relevant to analyze for different types of traffic simulation applications and be able to conduct suitable output analyzes. The student should also be able to reflect on how the output data is influenced by road design, driver behavior, travel demand, etc.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge of simulation methodology and theory

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Teaching activities include lectures and computer exercises. A larger project will be conducted.

Course contents:
Orientation about models for and applications of traffic simulation. Theory for car-following, lane-changing, speed adaptation, etc. Exemplification with the softwares/models AIMSUN2 and the VTI traffic simulation model for rural roads. Data acquisition, calibration/validation and output analyzes for traffic simulation models.
