Aim:
The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge about the geometrical and electronical structures of solids and to give an understanding of different properties and phenomena that are related to the geometrical and electronical structure.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Mathematics 40 p and Physics 40 p with 25 p passed in each.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The content of the course is presented in the form of lectures at which also a selection of problems are presented.
Course contents:
Geometrical structure of crystals. Direct and reciprocal lattices. Theoretical and experimental treatment of structure determination by diffraction. Crystal binding. Lattice vibrations. Dynamical properties derived from lattice vibrations: heat capacity, heat conductivity. Electronical structure of solids: Metals, semiconductors and insulators.
