Valid for year : 2008

NKEC63 Physical-Organic Chemistry, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Fysikalisk-organisk kemi /

For:   BKM   KeBi   Kem

Prel. scheduled hours: 52
Rec. self-study hours: 148

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Chemistry

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): G2

Aim:
The course is a continuation in organic chemistry and has the intention to give the student a profound knowledge in molecular structure, chemical bonding, quantum chemistry etc. This knowledge is applied in chemical reaction mechanisms and in spectroscopic methods. After studies well learned the student will have proficiency in:
  • understanding of physical-organic realationship between structure and reaktivity
  • identification of intermediate structures and explainations to reaction procedures and mechanism
  • evaluation of experimental tools to obtain information to confirm or reject a reaktion mekanism
  • profund explaination to pericyclic reactions, rearrangments, radical and carben reactions.
  • knowledge of different NMR techniques and ability to evaluate spectral data.
  • analysing laboratory obtain data from reactions and structures fron given instructions with NMR and basic computer modelling.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Attended Physical Chemistry A and B, Organic Chemistry 3.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Organic Synthesis

Organisation:
The theory is taught in lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Detailed survey on some central organic reaction mechanisms, giving knowledge on the effect of structure and reaction media on reactivity. Methods to study chemical reaction mechanisms. Symmetry-controlled reactions and reactions with reactive intermediates. Two-dimensional NMR-methods and molecular modelling.

Course literature:
Clayden, Greeves, Warren and Wothers; Organic Chemistry Lab.instructions from the department.

Examination:
A written examination
A laboratory course
4,5 ECTS
3 ECTS

The exam will check how the student has received the aimof the course. To pass the laboration course practical performance and approved reports is required
