For:   APB

Prel. scheduled hours: 60
Rec. self-study hours: 140

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Biology

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
The fast pace at which global biodiversity, i.e. the variety, distribution and abundance of species, is being reduced by human activities, calls for concerted efforts both in situ and ex situ. This course aims at giving an overview of ex situ conservation, covered by seven themes. (i) Integrating in situ and ex situ conservation (ii) Ex situ science and research (iii) Ex situ population management (iv) Education and training for conservation (v) Marketing and public relations for conservation (vi) Partnership and politics (vii) Ethics and welfare. As additional goals, and based on these themes, the students should be able to communicate the value and role of ex situ conservation in the global conservation efforts, and have a good insight into the practicalities of ex situ conservation.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Enrolment in the MSc programme in Applied Biology.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of: (i) Lectures, (ii) Seminars on subjects dealt with in selected scientific papers and zoo publications, (iii) Lab exercises in Kolmården with ex situ population management computer tools, (iv) Excursions to other ex situ institutions, (iv) Debates on various polarised topics relevant for ex situ population management, such as wild capture, release and rehabilitation programmes, where students will be assigned the task to present and defend a given view in a "public" hearing, and (v) Case studies of assigned ex situ conservation problems, presented as written reports.

Course contents:
The organisation of ex situ conservation; Stakeholders in ex situ conservation; The genetics of ex situ population management; Tools for ex situ population management; Ex situ conservation in practice: actors, space limitations, transports, disease control, ethological issues; Case studies: selected EEPs, release programmes; Zoo involvement in in situ research and conservation projects; Politics and economics in ex situ conservation; National, EU and international legislation; Public education and affecting public opinion; Ethics and welfare issues.
