Aim:
The aim of the course is to increase the students´ confidence in and mastery of the language in both professional and social contexts. The primary aim of the course is to develop oral skills, but written skills are also practised.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)

Organisation:
Teaching is in seminar form and attendance is compulsory.

Course contents:
The emphasis is on oral presentation. Communication is practised in various situations which are related to professional and/or everyday life. Students practise expressing themselves freely and emphasis is placed on the building of vocabulary, phrases and idiomatic expressions which are specific situations as well as increasing awareness of and practising grammatical structures which differ from the corresponding Swedish ones. Pronunciation and stress are taken up as necessary during oral practice. The social role of language is emphasised and students practise opening and holding conversations and discussions indifferent contexts. Cultural differences are considered. Training is given in presentation techniques, both individually and in groups, in argumentation and debate and in quickly summarising ad reporting the contents of a text, describing a process and giving clear instructions. Writing in a variety of forms is practised, such as letters of various types, summaries, minutes of meetings, memos, faxes and e mails. The written elements and oral of the course are integrated.

To pass the course, satisfactory attendance, active participation and successful completion of all the oral and written assignments is required.
