Aim:
To give knowledge about the most important physical processes in earth crust, the oceans and the atmosphere.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic courses in physics studied, 20 points (NFYA31, NFYA32 and NFYA 33).

Organisation:
The teaching consists of lecturing and tutorials in connection with minor projects.

Course contents:
The contents of the course can be summarized in a few main areas: meteorology, seismology, volcanoes, oceanography , gravitation and magnetic fields.The meteorology part describes the layers of the atmosphere,the composition and dynamics of the stratum of air, clouds, humidity precipitation of atmosphere and climatology. The energy balance of the earth and the greenhouse effect is described. Electricity in the atmosphere as well as phenomena as northern lights are included. Seismology and vulcanoes include the construction of the earths and moons crust, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes and suitable earthquakeproof constructions in the society. Oceanography treats ocean streams, tsunamis,polar ices and tides. Examples will be given on collection of information by means of sattellite measurements.
