Rec. self-study hours: 244

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Communication and Transport Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in planning and control of a traffic system and to give an overview of different classes of traffic models. The course should give insights about the principles and theories upon which the traffic models are based, give knowledge about how the theory and models are utilized in different applications, and give a practical insight about how model based planning tools can be used to describe and analyse problems related to planning and control in traffic systems.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TNK041 Optimization (KTS), TNK053 Optimization (ITS), TNK079 Traffic infrastructur (KTS)

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures and seminars and a number of laborations and computer exercises. The examination consists of exercises and laborations both individual and in smaller groups.

Course contents:
Part I: Classification of traffic models, strategic traffic planning, the gravity model, models for traffic assignment, logit models, estimation of traffic demand matrices. Part II: Traffic analysis using equilibrium models, traffic flow theory, dynamic models for traffic flows and network loading, Traffic control using traffic signals.

Course literature:
To be announced. Partly a course booklet.

Examination:
